How listings are vetted

  1. 1

    Find every venue

We start from public business records for wedding venues within 60 km of central Auckland.

  2. 2

    Keep the current ones

Open venues with at least one review, updated in the last year. Duplicates merged, non-venues removed.

  3. 3

    Read the venue's website

Ceremony, reception, BYO, accommodation and other features are marked only when the venue's own site says so.

  4. 4

    Show what is not known

If the website does not say, the venue page shows 'no information yet' instead of a guess.

Listings are free. Paid positions are always marked as paid, and they never change a venue's rating or the features shown.

Owners can claim a listing to correct details or add photos. A person checks every claim.

How to choose a wedding venue in Auckland

Auckland has wedding venues on vineyards, farms, beaches, islands and city rooftops. These five steps help you narrow a long list to the two or three worth visiting.

Start with guests, budget and date

Choose the setting, then the area

Rural and island venues can mean a long drive or a ferry, so check how guests will get there and home again. On-site accommodation is most common in Kumeū, Matakana and Clevedon.

Decide on one venue or two

Having the ceremony and reception in one place saves moving guests between sites. If you split them, allow travel time between the two and plan transport.

Check exactly what is included

Ask these before you pay a deposit

How to read the venue pages. A tick on a venue page means the venue's own website says it. "No information yet" means the site did not cover it, so ask. Read each rating with its review count: a 4.9 from 9 reviews tells you less than a 4.6 from 600.

Frequently asked questions

Cost and booking

How much does a wedding venue cost in Auckland?

Each venue sets its own prices, and what a package covers varies a lot, so compare full quotes rather than starting prices. 23 venues on this guide publish a starting price, shown on their cards with the GST status the venue states. The wedding venue budget calculator compares them with your guest number and budget.

Does the venue price include food and drinks?

Not always. Some venues cater everything in-house, 10 venues on this guide say you can bring your own caterer, and 15 say they allow BYO alcohol. Ask for a written list of what the price includes.

How can we keep venue costs down?

Compare what each quote includes, look at venues that allow your own caterer or BYO alcohol, and ask about smaller options. Some venues here describe pop-up, elopement or intimate wedding packages.

Are wedding venue deposits refundable?

It depends on the venue's own terms. Read the deposit and cancellation terms, and get them in writing, before you pay.

When should we book our wedding venue?

Once you have a date, a rough guest number and a budget. Keep your marriage licence in mind too: it must be arranged at least 3 working days before the ceremony and it expires after 3 months.

Choosing a venue

Which areas of Auckland have the most wedding venues?

Central Auckland has the most on this guide (41), followed by Kumeū (17), South Auckland (16) and the North Shore (14). Matakana, West Auckland, Waiheke Island, Clevedon, Franklin, the Hibiscus Coast, East Auckland and Whitford each have their own page.

Are there small or intimate wedding venues in Auckland?

Yes. Several venues describe intimate, elopement or pop-up weddings on their own websites, including Howick Historical Village, LaValla, Waitakere Resort & Spa and The Brigham. The Small weddings filter shows venues whose own website states a minimum of 30 guests or fewer, or a maximum of 60 or fewer.

Which venues cater for Indian and other cultural weddings?

Several say so on their own websites, including Markovina Vineyard Estate, Settlers Country Manor, Abel Estate, Allely Estate, Tui Hills and Glasshouse Morningside. Ask each venue about catering, ceremony space and timing for your traditions.

Can we bring our own alcohol (BYO)?

Some venues allow BYO and others supply every drink. A venue page shows BYO as yes only when the venue's own website says so, so confirm the terms and any corkage fee with the venue.

Which venues have accommodation on site?

37 venues on this guide say guests or the couple can stay on site, most often in Kumeū, Matakana and Clevedon. Use the accommodation filter above to see them all.

What happens if it rains on the day?

Ask every venue for its wet-weather plan, such as a covered deck, a marquee or an indoor room. 23 venues here describe a wet-weather option on their website.

Licences and permits

Does our venue need to be on our marriage licence?

Yes. You can only have the ceremony in the places you put on your marriage licence application, so add a back-up venue as well (govt.nz).

Do we need an alcohol licence for our wedding?

If alcohol is sold, for example a cash bar at a venue without its own licence, Auckland Council says a special licence is needed. Apply at least 20 working days before the event.

Can we get married in an Auckland regional park?

Yes, for the ceremony. Auckland Council needs a permit for anything more than a ceremony, receptions must be held in a private venue, and marquees, caterers, alcohol or amplified sound also need a permit.
